Panama Rosewood This is a previously undescribed Dalbergia (rosewood) species from an obscure corner of Panama. Only one small, expensive log was available and we took a chance by buying it. The useable material was quite nice with beautiful color and grain and a sweet, aromatic scent. We dried and sawed some guitar backs and sides out of one billet and it had very nice tonal qualities. We still have a few billets to re-saw into sets like this one but the supply is very limited of this rare rosewood. #IW19840-sold

Palisander One of several rosewood species from Madagascar. It has beautiful color and grain, a sweet smell, and is very easy to work and stable in use. It is a very close match to true Rio or Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) and as such is much in demand for musical instruments, especially guitars. #IW19816

______________________________________________ African Blackwood
The heartwood is purplish to brownish-black with dark gray streaks giving an overall impression of being black. Lustrous with an attractive inner chatoyance. Very hard, heavy, close-grained, and virtually free from pores. The sapwood is straw colored to a bright yellow, a stunning contrast to the heartwood. Its stability and lovely tonal qualities make it an excellent instrument wood. The grain is rift-sawn to flat-sawn. This set has excellent quality for the species. The back and sides are two-piece book matches and the sides are matched to the back as closely as possible. African Blackwood has its own unique tonal characteristics producing a very focused and powerful tone. It is greatly prized by those few luthiers who have had the opportunity to build with it. Rare. #IW18941 Nigerian
Ebony Sometimes called Gabon or Gaboon Ebony is sometimes jet black but oftentimes has grayish streaks that mostly disappear when finished or after the made object has been put into service. #IW18942 ______________________________________________ Guatemalan

Ebony This wood originated from a small, sparsely inhabited island off the east coast of New Guinea. Some of these trees grow to enormous dimensions. One of the first logs we received from here was 3 ½ feet in diameter, 18 feet long, and weighed 7 tons. It is fine-grained and takes a glassy smooth finish. #IW11156A
