Desert
Ironwood is found only in southwestern Arizona, southern California,
and northwestern Mexico. This desert tree attains a height of 25 feet
with a diameter seldom over 18 inches. It is one of the heaviest woods
found in North America. The dense heartwood varies in color from a light
tan to golden brown to chocolate brown often with darker striping. The
best colored material comes from dead trees/logs that may have lain
on the desert floor for decades. The wood is difficult to work because
of its hardness, but takes a beautiful, glassy-smooth polish.
