This Ebony is unsurpassed for its beauty and blackness. It is fairly fine-textured and takes a high polish. Rare. Once in a blue moon I run across Ebony like this that is almost poreless. These look to be all cut from the same log. On each square I burnished an area with my thumb and it looked like a piece of black plastic.

This rare burl is from S.E. Asia and is seldom seen on the world market. It is fine-grained and varies in color from a light reddish-brown to almost scarlet. It is easy to work and has a very pungent, spicy scent. For a burl it is remarkably stable. Green to partially air-dried. These are a book-matched set. A has a very small face defect.

American Holly
(Ilex opaca)

Holly is the whitest wood commercially available. Our stock was cut during the winter and quickly dried in a vacuum kiln to prevent discoloration. The result is very white wood without gray or bluish staining. The wood is fine-grained and is excellent for turnery, inlays, musical instrument edge bandings, etc. The grade is common and better which means that there can be some defects, mainly knots.

Striped Ebony

This wood originated from a small, sparsely inhabited island off the east coast of New Guinea. Some of these trees grow to enormous dimensions. One of the first logs we received from here was 3 ½ feet in diameter, 18 feet long, and weighed 7 tons. It is fine-grained and takes a glassy smooth finish. No longer available.

Guatemalan Rosewood

This Rosewood species has a reddish-brown to dark brown colored heartwood contrasting the almost white sapwood. The dust has a sweet odor. It is an excellent furniture/case works/jewelry box wood and even though it has a medium texture it does take a nice polish. We also offer it as a musical instrument wood (see guitar fingerboards and backs & sides elsewhere on the site). It has a very "crisp" tap tone with good sustain.

Figured European Pearwood
(Pyrus communis)
Almost all Pearwood imported into the U.S.A. has been steamed to bring out a more pinkish-red color and to prevent drying stresses. Formerly the wood was used for carving, turning, drawing instruments, wood engravings, textile printing blocks, and tool handles. Stained black it is an excellent substitute for Ebony. Contemporary uses include woodwinds such as recorders, furniture, kitchen accessories, jewelry and other boxes, and architectural uses such as paneling and doors.

Beautifully variegated and colored, Black Limba is easy to work and finish.
This wood is found in the equatorial forests of West Africa. Black Limba has wonderful tonal properties and is suitable for both solid-body guitars and acoustic guitars. Easy to work and takes a nice polish. Kiln-dried.

Bois de Rose is a true rosewood from Madagascar and is little known on the world timber market. It is a deep burgundy color, sometimes with darker striping and darkens on exposure. It is hard and heavy and takes a high, glassy- smooth polish. Very rare.

Most Wenge comes from the interior of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), and is floated to market on the Congo river. It is fairly hard and heavy with a medium to coarse texture. The heartwood is very dark brown with fine, nearly parallel black veining. Very rich looking when finished. Kiln-dried.

This small to medium sized tree is found along the dry coastal areas of Tanzania and Kenya. The wood is fairly straight-grained, and the yellowish to greenish-brown heartwood is sharply demarcated from the very light-colored sapwood. Texture is fine and even with an interlocked grain. The wood has an aromatic, spicy smell and the wood is distilled for its oil which is used in aromatherapy. After seasoning the wood shrinks little and is very stable in service. Shapes and turns well and takes a high polish. Used as a substitute for Sandalwood in India.

Panama Rosewood

This is a previously undescribed Dalbergia (rosewood) specie from an obscure corner of Panama. Only one small, expensive log was available and we took a chance by buying it. The useable material was quite nice with beautiful color and grain and a sweet, aromatic scent. We dried and sawed some guitar backs and sides out of one billet and it has very nice tonal qualities. We also have some 1" and 2" lumber available. The supply is very limited of this rare rosewood.

The heartwood is purplish to brownish-black with dark gray streaks giving an overall impression of being black. Lustrous with an attractive inner chatoyance. Very hard, heavy, close-grained, and virtually free from pores. Its stability and lovely tonal qualities make it an excellent instrument wood. But its main use is in turning, and it claims the title of the finest of turnery woods, well known as the standard by which other turnery woods are judged. Long a favorite of ornamental turners, the nature of the wood allows very fine detail with sharp cutters, leaving a beautiful, burnished surface. Taken to a fine polish Blackwood is the perfect handle wood, smooth and warm to the touch.

This extremely rare species is found in Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. Also called Green, Brown, or West Indian Ebony. The heartwood is brownish-yellow to dark brown often with a greenish tinge. It is usually beautifully veined with darker streaks. The wood is hard and heavy weighing 68 to 80 lbs/cubic foot. This high density contributes to its wonderful acoustic properties-it fairly rings when struck. It is well known for its use in woodwinds such as flutes, piccolos, and bagpipes because of its fine and uniform grain, its beautiful coloring and its resonance. These are not considered instrument-quality squares because they may have some grain run-out or small inclusions.

One of the world's densest and oiliest woods. The green to greenish-brown heartwood weighs between 80 to 90 lbs/cubic foot. Long used for its self-lubricating qualities in marine applications such as propeller shaft and rudder shaft bearings, it is also thought to have medicinal and healing properties. Its oily nature makes it difficult to glue but makes it a fantastic turning wood.
