BANKSIA PODS (Banksia grandis) Also called Australian Honeysuckle and Giant Banksia, this small tree is of interest to the turner not because of it’s timber, which is unremarkable, but because of the exceptionally large flower spikes it produces which can be used to produce beautiful novelty turnings. These flower spikes are enormous, up to a foot long. Pale yellow, they look like great candles in the tree. After drying, the seed follicles, which cover the spike or cone, look much like open, big-lipped mouths. The dense, reddish-brown pods are very hard and sharp tools are needed to slice through the woody material. The pods take a very high polish and are popular for dried flower vases, clock bases, handles, etc. $6.00 each or 10 for $50.00. __________________________________________ Grass Tree An odd turning material from Australia. #W2263-sold

Piassaba Palm Nuts This palm (Leopoldinia piassaba) also called the Chiqui-chiqui Palm, is native to Brazil, Columbia and Venezuela. The nuts, which are a source of vegetable ivory, are encased in a hard, botryoidal shell which itself takes a nice polish. These shells are mostly 1 1/8-1 ½” in diameter and are 2-3” long. The nuts are smaller and are loose in the shells. They have a fine delicate dark veining and are quite beautiful when turned or polished. $3.00 each, 10 for $25.00. ___________________________________________
