Palisander

is one of several rosewood species from Madagascar. It has beautiful
color and grain, a sweet smell, and is very easy to work and stable

This
figured board and the one just below it on the pile are book-matched
and from a log found in Gabon. It is very fine-grained and takes a nice
polish. The width varies from 27” to 34” but we have tallied
28” of width inside the sapwood.
One edge is square and one is waney. From one side of the boards to
the other the grain varies from flat-sawn to quartersawn.

Originating
in S.E. Asia, especially Indonesia, this Ebony is sometimes called Malaysian
Blackwood. The heartwood is dark, sometimes with black stripes or streaking
and oftentimes with a greenish cast in sharp contrast to the white to
straw colored sapwood. We import this in large cants up to 8 x 14”
with lengths to 10 feet. The wood is hard and heavy and is capable of
a fine, high polish. Excellent for turnery and precious woodworks such
as musical instruments, boxes, jewelry, etc.
