Makamong Burl Slab

Afzelia xylocarpa

This is from S.E. Asia and is also called Makamong. We cut a large burl years ago into 4" to 6" slabs. The burl was old to begin with, and had been lying in a timber brokers yard for who knows how long. But it was long enough for pests to burrow through the sapwood and into a bit of the heartwood. The effects were incredible. It reminds me of an old dolomite cave complex after thousands of years of water erosion. Full of fissures and chasms, it is easy to visualize bats flying in and out or maybe a miniature version of Shelob's lair.

A has some end checks and has a clear length of 126 inches. Tallied and priced accordingly.

B and C are not pictured except in the photograph of the ends of the boards, with B being the middle board and C being the bottom board. B and C have some small end checks, but nothing serious. All are consecutive slices of the same log and show the same figure as the top board.

These are some of the last of the live edged Bubinga slabs that will ever be available.

Camphor Burl Book-matched Table Slabs

Cinnamomum sp.

This rare burl is from S.E. Asia and is seldom seen on the world market. It is fine-grained and varies in color from a light reddish-brown to almost scarlet. These are "good with the bad" boards because we have left them as they came off our saw mill, i.e. we have not end-trimmed them or milled out any defects. These were milled out of exceptionally large blocks of burl. Green to partially air dried.

If you would like to purchase both of these boards together, the price will be $904.00. This price will not be reflected at checkout but we will charge you the correct amount when we run your card after the shipping price is calculated.

Figured Bubinga Table Slab

Guibourtia tessmannii

This is a one-of-a-kind board from the equatorial forest of West Africa. Called by some woodworkers African Rosewood, Bubinga is a deep, lustrous, brownish-red color with a fine, darker striping. The figure makes the wood doubly beautiful. It is very hard and heavy and takes a glassy, smooth finish. Bubinga has exceptional dimensional stability that makes it only one of a few timbers suitable for wide, one-piece boards. It will make a stunning dining table, conference table, bar top, etc. This board has only been rough sanded on one face. Taken to a final polish it will cause anyone's eyes to pop. Kiln-dried. It has some natural flaws that were in the log when it was harvested. If you are worried about damage from shipping, for a small fee we can custom build a shipping crate. Note: This board weighs around 1000 lbs.

Makamong Burl Table Slab

Afzelia xylocarpa

This slice of burl came from an ancient forest tree of Laos. Surviving its youth as a sapling, it survived despite tropical monsoons, insect invasions, and wars to become a behemoth 16 feet in girth and 50 feet to its first branch. It eventually succumbed to old age and began the inevitable journey back to the earth from whence it came. This burl was rescued before its total demise but not before some insects left some damage in the outer sapwood. A unique, one-of-a-kind forest gem.

Pomelle Figured Sapele Table Board

Entandrophragma cylindricum

One selectively harvested log from Central Africa yielded these beautiful table boards. The figure is a cross between pomelle and quilted and has a three-dimensional aspect that makes you think the board has a bumpy texture when in fact it is a flat, sanded surface.

Two straight edges. Beautifully figured.
