Figured Hawaiian Koa

This species is found almost exclusively in the Hawaiian Islands. It ranges in color from a pale brown to a reddish brown to a very dark, almost chocolate brown. It has a texture similar to Walnut but is easier to work. Can be highly chatoyant or lustrous. Highly sought after for use in musical instruments, especially guitars and ukuleles. Thuya burl is hard and dense with a high oil content, but tends to be brittle. The eyes, perfectly round, are scattered about in some burls like the figure in bird's-eye maple; in others they are grouped as islands. Due to it's desert occurrence, the wood sometimes contains small defects or inclusions but most can be repaired with cyanoacrylate (super) glues. These seeds are from a palm tree found mostly in Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru. They are commonly known as vegetable ivory or ivory nuts and are used as a substitute for elephant ivory in carvings and turnings. They are used for beads, buttons, carvings, and small turned vessels and boxes. Because the seed, as it hardens, can develop a small fissure or cavity in its center, it is necessary to incorporate this defect into the design. The seeds can be polished to a glass smooth finish. They have an oblong shape and are approximately 1 3/8-2 inches long.

Brazilian Bloodwood Turning Squares

Curly European Sycamore

This European Maple is native to central Europe and west Asia. It is a tough, white or cream colored, fine-grained timber. It reminds me of vanilla ice cream because it is so even-colored. It works well in any grain direction. It is used for musical instruments, furniture, cabinetry, and because it is non-staining it is used for kitchen utensils, wooden spoons, rolling pins, and cutting boards. The figure is fiddleback on the quartersawn surface and more of a broken curl on the flatsawn surface. Select, quartersawn material is used for violin backs and sides and necks. Dry.

Red Palm

This Palm is from Indonesia. In the past this wood has been known as Porcupinewood, either for the long, reddish, hard fibers running throughout, or by the prickly nature of its splinters. The end-grain has a unique, distinctive, 'snake skin' appearance.
