Figured African Blackwood Turning Squares/Knife Handle Billets

Dalbergia melanoxylon

The heartwood is purplish to brownish-black with dark gray streaks giving an overall impression of being black. Lustrous with an attractive inner chatoyance. Very hard, heavy, close-grained, and virtually free from pores. Its stability and lovely tonal qualities make it an excellent instrument wood.

Due to CITES regulations, we can only ship this species to customers in the United States.

A has a "swimming fish" figure which looks like a school of fish swimming against a current. I think it is likely bird's-eyes cut at a bias which produces this unique figure.

B has cluster burls and bird's-eyes.
C has bird's-eyes and swirly grain.
D has cluster burls and swirly grain.
E has a sort of krinkled, swirly grain and some light bird's-eyes. It looks magnificent in direct sunlight.
